“(If I Did The) Carioca”

Terry Gross did the best interview ever with Daniel Handler — aka Lemony Snicket — about his new noir novel for children, Who Could That Be at This Hour.

Highlights include an accordion cover of “When Doves Cry” (yes, really) and this brilliant observation about the parallels between PIs and femme fatales:

They’re both confined by their circumstances and they’re both making their own moral path through a world that is sinister and secretive. … I think it’s what draws them together, and also what makes them fight. … You could have a detective and a mysterious young girl who are birds of a feather and who can’t stand one another, and who are unapologetic about making their way in a world that seems to have no place for them.

I need to go buy this book posthaste.  Like, right now.
